Locking up my phone and laptop at night.

A few months ago I asked my friend Jeff Goodwin (of Kilomade Studios and Krakatoa Design) if he could build me a wooden lockbox, with a hole for any charging cables to go through. I then also bought a tiny Master Lock and key, as well as a kitchen time safe from Amazon.

Now, when I want focus off my computer or phone (and likewise most evenings when I come home), I put the devices in the box, lock it, put the key in the time safe, and set it to reopen in 5-6 hours (long enough so that I’m asleep by when it reopens).

My first idea was just the lockbox. I didn’t come up with the idea for the time-lock – I think Jeff sent me an article that included a photo of a time-lock-safe someone had built for their phone (with a satisfying piggy-bank-like slot for dropping the phone into).

If you’re interested in this sort of thing, Cal Newport writes about all this better than I can.
